|Comments||The land knows best. For Kanata's original owner-developer William Teron it had to be this land – the site he'd reserved for his dream home. Here was the Canadian palette he loved – rugged rocks, a tranquil pond and tall Spruce trees.
Bill Teron started the project in 2003. By then he'd done everything, from restoring palaces to delivering emerging-economy housing. Bill had valued public good, donating land that became Toronto's Harbourfront. And he'd served at the highest levels of housing policy.
Above all, Bill Teron was passionate about architecture. He studied the masters as well as traditional styles like the Japanese court garden house.
A lifetime of building knowledge is in play at this stunning home. First there was the road – kept in private hands to conserve trees and sight lines. Then came sketches, models, designing and refining designs, along with calculating solar angles and seasonal light. Think fine art – backed by the resources of a world-class development team. Every detail would be perfect, simply because it could be.
Arriving – you'll wonder if you've missed it. The home's street-face is recessed into the landscape, shaded by rooftop gardens. But turning into the drive you're struck by a sure-footed sense of place. Spruce trees rise. A vine covered stone wall speaks of strength and permanence. It's sand stone – natural Kanata rock, with the warm hue of summer. There's a double garage, so discrete you won't notice. Rays of natural light twinkling through an understated entryway are the only note of contrast.
Step inside and you're guided to a central lounge designed to greet guests and host large gatherings. Curved ceilings and walls echo the impressive sense of sky from overhead glass. By day you'll delight in dancing reflections of natural light. At night, professional-grade lighting sets a chic resort mood.
All materials –even the dazzling black granite floors - were selected to define a space that vibrates with light and life, bringing outside in and blurring the line between ever changing nature and human experience. In winter when the sun is low, black floors absorb solar heat. It's sustainability, simplified.
Between inside and outside? Only the fluid curves of sculpted glass windows. The glass was crafted for optical clarity in Belgium, then sent to China to be shaped. You'll feel its musical spirit: flowing; harmonious and inspiring.
Beyond, water sparkles. Step out to the slate deck and be enchanted. The deck is bordered by reflective Japanese-style water gardens rippling reflected light into the home. Just beyond – the site's natural pond. A landscaped rock face cradles this sunny and sociable deck in total privacy.
Savour the main living space – an ellipse-shaped wonder where style flows sinuously to embrace everyday life. A curve of bookshelves marks a study/office area. The kitchen is walled by a wave of unobtrusive custom cabinetry, including pantry and elite appliances. Under foot – smooth ground-in-place travertine tile. The ellipse shaped island is seamless too, with curved maple cabinetry and travertine top, plus accents of bird's eye maple.
Beyond, a circular media room with curved windows and recessed ceilings is the essence of relaxation. It can be dark, or a brilliant private conversation retreat, flooded with natural light. Custom cabinetry and elegant modern columns distinguish a "world's great homes" experience.
At the opposite end of the house, tranquility reigns. An arched hall leads to a curving master bedroom and sitting area where outside and inside seem as one. Every new day here means waking up right inside nature, while surrounded by comfort and style. Details impress, from sleek walk-in to fully equipped master ensuite. Offer visitors a sheltering and quiet guest bedroom nearby, designed to please with unique curving ensuite.
Creators will be thrilled by the home's 'piece de resistance' – a fully circular second floor office, bordered by zen-like exterior ponds. Imagine working under this evocative wood ceiling, with 360 degrees of natural window light. It's Ottawa's ultimate refuge for 'outside-the-box' thought leaders.
Details? Powder rooms are where they should be. The laundry is large and well-styled. Systems – from In-floor heating, to HVAC are of the highest quality. There's ample storage and workshop space plus direct garage access. And yes –there's a waterfall.
This future-maker's home will never be duplicated. It's a distinguished ready-made canvas –built for exceptional lives. Trust your vision. Plan to call soon.
